I currently have (2) 20" CRT flat-screen Toshibas, and I am buying various durable goods in anticipation of inflation. My needs are far from "cutting edge". My current television is on for 4 hours or so per day. The 2nd Toshiba sees maybe 5 hours usage per month.
Does anyone have an opinion, if this Panasonic item is a reliable product?

You might want to order it from Amazon.com instead, since it has free shipping and no sales tax:
http://www.amazon.com/Panasonic-TC-L32X2-3...8108&sr=8-1
The 32" TV will be slightly taller than your current 20" TV so if you're looking for a bigger TV, I'd suggest taking a peek at the 37" sets. They're a little more expensive, but it's worth taking a peek.

Thanks, Fez. It has a lot of connections - including ones that fits my dvd player and the 20 or so dvds I own! I am intrigued by the vga 15-pin connector. Thank you for the amazon reference. But I won't buy from them. I did once, and then had to block them from my email, and my postal mailbox was inundated with subsequent "offers" from Amazon and this or that seller.
I have a T-W HDMI cable, which they gave me when I turned in a non-hd box for one that was hd compliant..no upcharge. So I should be ok there.

Consumer Reports gave it a 69/100. You say your needs are not cutting edge but if it were me I would be concerned about 60hz and the 720p. You will get some ghosting while watching sports due to 60hz. I'm not sure how much you are willing to spend but checking Amazon you can get some pretty good LCD's that are 1080p 120hz for $600.

720p on a 32" TV is not a big deal unless he's going to be sitting 3' from the screen.

60Hz refresh rate won't contribute to ghosting, however a set might have some motion blurring due to it having a 60Hz refresh rate.
Stuck - I have a 37 Panasonic (TC-37LZ85) behind my bar, 1080p but only 60hz. I have enjoyed watching the Bills (via Sunday Ticket) on it and I'm very satisfied with the set to date. HD is beautiful, and SD is decent. This set is now a couple years (and some months) old. Fez once asked how I could watch a game a such puny set (those crazy projector guys!). I would agree with Fez and suggest you may wish to consider a 37" model instead of a 32. They seem awfully small, at least to me anyway.

If you use any sort of TiVO/DVR (ha!), you'll need an HD version of that as well.
I have a Panasonic plasma...it's awesome. Bought it from Amazon and uncheck all their email buttons so I get zero emails from them except receipts. Can't speak specifically to the TV model you're looking at but my Panasonic has been reliable.

I decided to purchase a 26" Toshiba model (through amazon!). I sit approximately 7 feet from the current 20" flat-screen CRT, my wife 6 feet. I visited a local Wal-Mart this morning; a 32" would look like a roadside billboard in our small living room. Our relative viewing angle is a measured 50 deg., so that should be ok.
JA - My dvd player is an upconvert item - but I counted my dvd collection - we own 10, that I could find. I like this Toshiba model, because it had a pretty comprehensive array of ports - VGA, 2 HMDI, 2 component, 1 composite, S-video, and coax (useful for antenna connection if my T-W cable craps out). I downloaded the manual before purchase. I do have a lot of VHS tapes (seldom watched, except for the Xmas season ones), and the ole' VCR has composite outputs.
The dvd player is currently connected via s-video and that's fine for us.
$345 was the cost, with shipping.

Ummm, my computer at home is hooked up to a 24" and 20" monitor side by side...
You may have thought it would look like a billboard in your living room -- but after a day or two, it wouldn't have.

No - the current 20" flat-screen already looms like a giant. And yes, a 32"+ POS would look like a billboard, despite your opinion of my and my wife's personal sensibilities.

My primary monitor is 22" and I have been seriously considering giving it to my sone and upgrading to a 24". If Stuckincincy
is OK with a smaller size, that's his personal choice, but those smaller sets remind me of watching a program thru a peep hole....

Agreed. :)
If you decide to get a second monitor, I *highly* recommend connecting them both up to your computer at the same time. It's awesome having multiple monitors - I've only recently started doing that at home, but at work I've had two monitors for 4 years and it adds so much rpoductivity.
This week I've had my homework assignment, my classroom IM window, and my MP3 player on the monitor on the left, while I have my web browser and Word opened on the right. Being able to see all of that stuff at once without having them buried under windows is great. <_<

Agree about the Amazon part, I bought my plasma from them and saved a bunch. Never had any special offer emails from them and I buy something from them at least once a month. I got Amazon Prime for free because I'm back in school which means 2 day shipping is free. Pretty sweet. Actually pretty sweet for them, I'm doing more impulse shopping knowing I can have whatever i want in 2 days.

The vendor that amazon tapped for the sale decided to send me an e-mail. Since placing that order, I have had a storm of communication, over 10 vendors, blocked by elink. It was 207kb of text.

So you didn't buy it from Amazon, you bought it from a 3rd party through Amazon? That's a big difference...
Of course I've purchased things from 3rd party vendors through Amazon before, and never get spammed... You SURE it's all from Amazon?

No - I invoked amazon, dealt with them, and they evidently negotiated the sale through one of their allied vendors...isn't that what amazon does? I know they don't maintain a warehouse of goods. I contacted amazon (by telephone), and they jumped through hoops to assure me.
Are you saying that I did wrong? Should I call my card issuer and deny payment?

Why do you think that everybody but you is stupid?
What makes you say that...? I'm just trying to help answer your questions...
That said, yes Amazon does have their own warehouses and stocks their own products. They're also a portal that allows other companies to sell through them.
As an example, check out this TV:
http://www.amazon.com/Samsung-LN37C530-37-...9046&sr=8-1
Notice how it says "Sold by Amazon?" If you add that to the cart, you're buying it directly from an Amazon warehouse.
Now look at the right hand side of the page -- notice how it says "More buying choices?" That means you can also buy the same TV through Amazon's site, but it will be sold by Abt Electronics, Buy.com, or DataVision Computer Video, depending on which of the links you click (your choices may be different - they generally list the lowest prices and that can fluctuate throughout the day).
So if you called them up yourself, the rep you talked to probably went to their site (or their internal representation of the site) and found a TV set that fit your needs for the lowest cost. Amazon handles the credit card processing, and the product is then shipped via the other vendor. No need to worry about your credit card or anything. The other company gets your email address, and can possibly send you spam. I've never been swamped with spam like you said you are, but I don't use a real account that I do personal mail on anyway, so it doesn't bother me even if they do.
Hope that helps make things a little clear, and I apologize if I offended you in some way. That wasn't my intention at all.
