Correct me if I'm wrong, but Kelsay hasn't alwasy been 90.

I am not sure what his previous number was but I know he switched.

EDIT:  The article says he has worn it his entire career, but I swear I remember him wearing another number.

Kelsay has no right to even be on a football field, much less keep his number, much less make 5 mil.

I not care for his personality either. Going to Mario to tell him he can't have his number is kinda childish. Chris, don't assume you even have a place on this team. He referred to Dareus as "borderline cocky." No, not in the slightest. That's known as "talent."

Well "I not care" for your personality either...I think we all agree Kelsay is overpaid, but if you can get over that, what you have is a good 4-3 DE when his hand is down. No, he'll never get you 10 sacks, but he's also not the player the team made play OLB for the past two seasons. He's was actually really solid at the end of the year when we switched back to the 4-3.

And how is it childish to tell the new member of the team you're not giving up your #? It's actually pretty classy on both parts if you ask me.

It's amazing how many here want to cut Kelsay so desperately. And I bet when a DE gets injured this year, they'd bitch about our lack of depth after the fact too.

You don't cut quality players unless you're broke. Depth is GOOD.

I think Kelsay has always been 90. Schobel wore 92 for a year or so before he switched to 94

I've had a few shots of Jameson and under the circumstance (of the shots), I agree, we should cut Kelsey.  He should feel fortunate that he's had the #90 for the bills long enough.  The number hasn't done much for him.  If he's such a good "locker room" guy, he should give it up (or sell it).  The number hasn't brought him much success to date and likely never will.  Make our franchise player happy and give it up.  You're a backup now. Act like it...while you collect your 5 mill+ per year.

IF he sticks.

Perfectly said. Apparently we are only allowed to have one good player at any position.

Really? Kelsay has been in the League and the Bills longer, so he shouldn't have too. Mario Will look great in # 97 and remind us of an oversized Cornelius  Bennett making plays again.

Sorry but #97 was Leif Larsen's number.  It's not available ;)

This excuse is very common. Except, Kelsay has lined up as if 4-3 DE most of the time even when he was listed as a OLB throughout the 3-4 era. I don't know how anyone can justify the term "solid" when he is supposed to be a pass rush specialist yet gets no sacks. When he does, they seem like flukes. Others call him a run-stuffer, which is ridiculous, because he had zero run stuffs last year and very few over his entire career. It's no accident that the highest paid player the Bills have ever signed happens to play Kelsay's position.

Ryan Denney also switched from 90 to 92 the year Kelsay arrived.

Why should he give it up?  Kelsay has played well for the Bills.  Why should Carrington give 92 up?  If you move teams and your numbers taken, suck it up and pick something else.

I don't know what yall have been been watching for the last 10 years.  At DE Chris has been solid.  Not great, but solid.

Good for you Chris in not giving it up.

I hope the Bills assign Williams #78.  That would be sweet.

Loved your post except assigning #78 to Willimas.  That's sacred man.  Mario is no Bruuuce!

Funny how marginal talent, "high motor" hayseeds like Kelsay get so much love around here from some. Let him clutch that #90 on the sidelines all year while he watches a real player do his job.

Disrespectful.

Complete non issue, way to make something over nothing. Williams is a low key guy, and according to Kelsay could care less about it.

Kelsay could very well be cut due to his salary, and the fact that he plays the same RDE that Williams plays. The number has nothing to do with it. Personally I think the Bills need Kelsay. The only complete DE on the roster other than Williams that can play every down. Anderson and Merriman (if he makes it) are pure pass rushers, Carrington has been inconsistent at best so far.

THe article also indicates that Williams has not asked Kelsey about the number.
Williams was not #90 in college.  Maybe he does not care what number he wears.

I found this part interesting:

Quote

It's not often a veteran player decides to switch numbers while staying with the same team. When it happens, the player is required to buy up all the unsold jerseys of the old number. Depending on inventory, that could wind up costing a minimal amount or a couple hundred thousand dollars' worth. Prominent players can afford it. The bigger problem is fans who have bought the jersey don't like to have an outdated jersey of a star player who is still on the team and wearing a new number.

Wonder if this applied to Spiller/McKelvin trading numbers last year.  I still see Spiller jerseys for sale with the old number.

There's some real mean spirited posts on here.  Chris Kelsay is going to make the team.  He may start, he may not, he probably will.  The guy has played for the Bills for ten years and loves it here.  I met his Dad at Midway on the way home for the Raiders game last year and had a beer with him.  Hell of a nice guy.  While I was talking to him, he picked up the phone, called Chris and asked him if it was cool if I came to hang out with him, Kyle Williams, Lindell (his closest homies on the team apparently) after the game at some bar they always go to in OP after every home game.  I'm 33, so I'm too old to go gawk at professional football players, but if I was ten years younger, it probably would have been awesome.  My point is twofold: #1- you come off like real a**holes and #2- you really don't know football that well at all.  The guy has been voted captain by his peers several times, he's proud to be a member of this franchise, he is valuable to this team.  Did you not watch the game against the Broncos last season?  He was the best player on the football field on either team.  He's not a great talent, but he's certainly deserving of making the 53-man roster.  What, you think they should keep Robert Eddins in his place or something?  As a 4-3 run defender, Kelsay is actually a pretty effective football player.
