They hardly used the Wildcat last year and I think Vince Young could run it just as well and maybe better than Smith. Young can run and he would be a true passing threat. Smith did next to nothing last year as a returner. I would rather we keep an extra DB that can return or a younger WR than Smith. And I would rather they trade for or grab a project QB from the waiver wire.
Just don't see the need to keep him and his contract. Use that money to resign Levitre and Byrd.
Please someone tell me what I am missing???

I believe that Chixley feel they have to justify his signing last year so they won't let him go.
I agree with everything you wrote and on top of all that, there are a lot of good O and D linemen I'd like for the Bills to hold onto.
Then you add the fact that some teams don't even carry a 3rd quarterback.
Plus Smith makes about $3.8 million for this year.
I'd shed no tears if the guy was cut but I don't think they'll do it this year.
Best case scenario: He has a great season and proves why they were right to keep him.

But at the end of day I agree with SJBF, the biggest reason he's safe is the guaranteed $. Given his potential and the cost of cutting and replacing him, doesn't justify the added roster depth move at the other positions the OP mentioned.

It would be an admission that signing him in the first place was a mistake.
They'd rather try to give Smith a chance to prove that signing him as a free agent was the right move.

I understand what your saying, he seems below average at everything. But he saves roster spots, by having a guy that can supposedly play QB, WR, KR we can keep an 2 other players. A 3rd string QB is relatively useless anyhow, usually if it comes to that steam ends up signing a old vet off the street and your season is pretty much shot anyway. Smith was effective in the wildcat while on the Jets and Chan blames the lack of an offseason for not using it more, and he seems to like just having the wildcat formation in the playbook simply for the fact that it adds another wrinkle to the opposing teams planning. Now we have david lee who supposedly implemented the scheme with Ricky Williams and Ronnie Brown in Miami. If you want to see someone cut to resign players look at the 33 year old Kelsay, Dwan Edwards, or Spencer Johnson.

They can't direct-snap to Freddy or CJ?
If you think he was automatic on third down because he has some special third-down mojo, then I don't know what to think.

So say you made a mistake and cut him - its worse to make a second mistake by keeping him around another year and hope that it covers up your first mistake.
They need to get Levietre and Byrd signed.
