Totally overrated statement. Do you think it's possible Stevie Johnson could be second string? The only thing this means is they don't think the starter is good enough to have the starting job, if that position is QB, you're in trouble.

This competition will interest me when the 3rd party to this open competition is named Smith, Barkley, Wilson or Manuel.

(And, once the regular season began, Trent did just that - lose the job after two games, thus wasting QB expert Chan Gailey's 6 months of OTA/mini-camp/training camp/and preseason open competition and evaluation)
I wonder if Brad Smith will also be part of this competition, and will we throw our 1st-round pick Matt Barkley into the mix? Any chance of Tebow coming here as a TE/#3 QB???
GO BILLSSS!!!!
19 and 0 baby!!!!!

Unless coach is bringing in a ton of FA's I don't see how this isn't just typical off season coachspeak.

What he did in syracuse would be nice.
Clean the place up.
Don't any one fear that we won't be very serious about getting a QB within the first two rounds.
Also and important , i can see him kicking anyone to the curb anytime. Look how they handled T Mcgee and Barnett and Wilson.
Boom.
Professional, respectful but sudden and complete.
I can imagine Fitz gone shortly if it's about freeing up cap cash.

Wait - are you saying the depth chart on the website might be different come September?!? I just finished learning Chans and was hoping they'd stick to that.

“I spoke with Ryan (Fitzpatrick) and Tarvaris (Jackson) and told them we will have an open competition at the quarterback position – similar to what we will do at all positions on our team heading into our offseason work,” said Marrone. “I believe that our players will embrace this challenge. We are looking forward to working with our players as we prepare for the 2013 season.”
It doesn't sound like it was part of a pre written press release......which implies that it was a direct response to a question......likely about who will be the starting QB.
I'm wondering if there is any other possible response that he could have given at this time......and if not, doesn't it make the comment totally meaningless?

competiton is a word that does not always mean competition when spoken by The Organization.
It could mean , " yep both you guys are not what we want at this point. maybe you each could start trying ALOT harder to meet our vision "

Difference being if Williams gets beat out at LDE, his primary position, odds are he will beat someone else out at RDE. If, god forbid, he gets beat out at RDE, there's always OLB. There are four possible positions for him to play before being relegated to the bench.
For Fitz or Jackson, not so much

Very exciting to hear... We'll see how it applies to the QB position.
