Fantastic in-depth read on sad state of Toronto #Argos, "a team living in purgatory," by colleague Bill Lankhof: http://www.torontosu...league …

I know... let's put an NFL team there!

Yeah. Can't even sellout their team's stadium playing their version of football, but they "deserve" an NFL team.

The LA of Canada.

I love how leagues want to force teams into a big market even though they don't have the fan support.

Once they do get them to win, they are pure gold.  Look @ what the NHL and Chicago Blackhawks have accomplished.  Of course they were an old franchise... But fan support was dieing on the vine, now everybody is a 'Hawks fan!  You couldn't give a ticket away in 2007.

Blackhawks is a terrible example.

One of the best fan bases in the league was literally opressed by Wirtz for a decade.

The late Jon Candy, a football player before making it big in comedy, owned the Argos and enjoyed great success in the stands and on the field.  The team kind went adrift after he left us.

it was Candy, McNall, and gretzky.

they also bought a honus wagner card I believe

The fact is, Toronto is a tough sell on anything that isnt the Maple Leafs.

I even went to a Memorial Cup up there and it wasnt sold out.

real fans support their team no matter what.

LA and Toronto where winners once where are their "fans" now.

Sounds like a real football town.

The NHL in Canada is like the NFL in the US and to me anyway that's one of the reasons it won't work after the first couple years of initial euphoria if the NFL ever did put a team in Canada.

If the Bills-Toronto series is any indication, if they put a team an NFL team in Toronto then it's going to be a trainwreck.  They will have a flashy new stadium and a lot of corporate support, but they will be playing in a mostly empty stadium on Sundays.  Is that the kind of product that the NFL wants to project?  Or do they want a stadium like the Ralph full of 80,000 crazy fans screaming at the top of their lungs?

Leafs are the Cubs of hockey.  The NHL will have them back now that big markets take priority in that Leauge.  The NFL will do the same just like they have done for New England, etc.. especially if they pony up their own money.  Well, tried in Dallas & Washington, but those are just idiot teams by even bigger idiot owners.

What you said about real fans is what I tell Blackhawks' fans when I try to needle them... As a Sabres fan, that's all we got now!  LoL...They make all kinds of excuses, dead owner, no cable contract, big market with other events to spend their money, etc.... Blah, blah, blah... Then I hit them w/: "What about the Cubs?"  Oh, they say they are "regional."  Huh?  Same way in Boston... There's no support if the teams are losing.  Well outside the BoSox.  SEE: Cubs/Leafs and even Bills

They have us Bills fans over a barrel.

Hoping some of our Canadian brethren can chime in here, but as a stateside follower of the CFL, it seems like every franchise outside of Sask. and Calgary have experienced similar woes with regard to attendance, fan interest, even politics and stadium building (see Ti-Cats). Rogers Centre is terrible for football, bottom line, and that will never change.

It took years for Montreal to get the Alouettes back...and now they are middle of the pack in terms of attendance. And speaking of cities who have lost franchises previously, it should be interesting to see the REDBLACKS home opener tonight in Ottawa.

Toronto won the Grey Cup in 2012, so it's not like they haven't had recent success.

The CFL is small town.  It is enjoying some greater success in recent years, but it will always struggle in Toronto unless they move to a venue that holds 20 - 30K, like Montreal did.  Toronto is too ethnic, for lack of a better word, to support football at a frenzied level.  The Bills' disaster there should send a huge message to the NFL.

I live in Saskatchewan,  where the whole province lives and breathes football.  We held the Grey Cup last year and it was like a massive, province-wide party.  When it is held in Toronto, it does not garner near the attention or party atmosphere.

So, NFL, stay out of Toronto.  It has a massive population but is definitely not a football town.

Great question, Promo.  Can El Pegual own BOTH the Bills AND the Sabres if he also owns the CFL??  I'm surprised no one has asked before.
